Visiting Bajos del Toro Waterfall: One of Costa Rica’s Tallest Falls

Catarata Del Toro

I love waterfalls. This is something that I didn’t know about myself before we started traveling, but if there is a possibility of seeing a waterfall, I am probably going! Which is why when I read that there is a 270 foot tall waterfall about an hour out of our way, I knew we had to go! Right from the entrance of Bajos del Toro park, you have an amazing bird’s-eye-view looking down over the waterfall! It is rare to find a waterfall that seems so remote with such nice trials and amenities. (It was an amazing place to fly the drone too!)

The hike down doesn’t take long but is filled with steep steps. Of course, what you hike down you will eventually have to hike back up! Because of the power of the falls and slipperiness of the rocks you can’t swim in the water. But standing at the bottom of the falls, surrounded by the Costa Rican jungle is a really incredible feeling!

We read online that you had to drive down a dirt path but we were able to drive on a nice, paved road the whole way to the entrance. I will say that the mountain roads getting to the waterfalls are windy and steep. Our little car, pedal to the metal, really struggled to make it up some of the hills. But the roads themselves were paved and well kept. (I was thankful that we weren’t driving the RV though!)

There are actually several different waterfalls that are all privately owned in the area. However, each fall has its own entrance fee so we just paid about $14 USD to see the Bajos del Toro waterfall. If you are a fan of waterfalls and have a car, Bajos del Toro waterfall is worth the detour on your way to la Fortuna!
