Sloth Watching Trail (La Fortuna)
If spotting a wild sloth is what you are looking for, then Costa Rica is the perfect place to visit! La Fortuna, a popular tourist town, is a great place to spot one of these friendly, docile animals!
Being eager to see a sloth, Em and I followed the big billboards in town to a place called Sloth Watching Trail, right outside of the town of La Fortuna. It probably isn’t the most “wild” sloth spotting experience. It honestly looked like the park kept a small patch of trees outside the town just to make it easier to spot sloths. So although the sloths are wild, it kinda feels like you are spotting sloths in the zoo. It costs about $10 to enter. It wasn’t what we were expecting, but we did get to see our first two wild sloths! (Little did we know we were about to see several other sloths soon =)Â
The trail has the option to pay for a guided tour for about an extra $50, but we decided to go sloth spotting on our own. About 15 minutes into our walk we saw two sloths that were just hanging out in the trees! (Well, another visitor actually pointed them out to us! (We’re not exactly expert sloth spotters I guess =) The one sloth really put on a show, hanging from his back legs and scratching his head! (I’m pretty sure this sloth was related to Sid from the movie Ice Age. =)Â
The sloth trail is great and we were thrilled to see two sloths, but it was a little different than what we were expecting. But Sloth Watching Trail is very convenient and probably one of the easiest ways to spot a wild sloth. (And if you’re like us and haven’t yet polished your sloth spotting skills, just look for the group of tourists with their cameras pointed into the trees! =)
